Free publications are some of my favorite reads. From The Healthy Hippie to Seven Days, I have discovered that some of the best things really are free. This week's local cult paper provided some good fodder for my inner sunbather and I thought it worth while to pass it on.
The article Summer of Lounge espouses not only the desire for, but also the human need to sit still, do nothing, or participate in what I call sacred play. Every good preacher knows that most of the time the sermon is for the sermonizer and this one is no different. Sitting still and being still is not one of my strong suits. Even when I do finally allow gravity to keep my tired bones firmly positioned on any comfortable surface I still find that my mind races as fast as the proverbial toddler on a sugar high. Simply being is a practice that I have not yet mastered. Therefore, when a poetic collage of summertime laziness crosses my path I pay attention.
Here's the crux of it all. We will all be more productive during the time that we DO work if we intentionally DON'T work at other times.
This is not new information. Sabbath practices have been around for a good long time, meditation was used millenia ago by spiritual seekers in both the east and west, and the siesta was more naturally built into the work day before the dawn of quarterly reports.
So this summer I intend to be lazier with a quiet mind, to lie in sun drenched patches of grass imagining shapes in the clouds, and to soak in the beauty of the earth while I can. Will you join me? Shhhh... It's time to play.

A New Look, A New Program
As you can already see, Next Generation Coaching is undergoing a major digital make over. Visit my website in the next few hours to see what is going on over there, too!
What you can't see is that, in addition to a digital makeover, NGC has also been sculpting new and exciting ideas on the program front with the hope of bringing coaching to a larger number of emerging adults.
Over the last two months the business vision has expanded and the business plan has been revamped with a focus that could take the program beyond Burlington, beyond Vermont, and perhaps someday, beyond the US borders. Burlington is the perfect incubator for this vision and it is my delight to bring these resources first to the young people of this quirky, eclectic, and soul-nourishing city.
You can already go to my Client Resources page to find out more about the new program that NGC is presenting called, in a somewhat preliminary way, Creating Your Future. (suggestions of more creative names that remain somewhat descriptive are welcome!... infact, IF YOU PICK THE NAME THAT STICKS YOU CAN ACCESS THIS PROGRAM FOR 50% OFF! Drop them in the comments to this post.)
With Creating Your Future you will begin to uncover yor strengths, values, and interests in order to build a vision for your career. To do this we will utilize three assessment tools, take inventories of your knowledge about yourself, and first dreamstorm, then narrow in on some goals for your future. We will also work on adding to your dreambuilding toolkit by practicing some learned skills like networking lifestyle, giver’s gain, daily practices for confidence building, future visioning, habitat creation, etc. By the end of this program you should emerge with not only a vision, goal, and plan for your future but the toolkit that you will need in order to execute them.
It is a compilation of the best of resources that I have worked with, honed, and put into practice myself. It is not a blueprint for how to live your life but a program for creating the life you want. Using this in conjunction with your personal coach will allow you to think bigger, turn obstacles into building blocks, and gain confidence in yourself and your plans, visions, and aspirations.
Thanks for being a part of this journey with me! It's always an adventure!
Be Well!
Rachel

What do you need to know to be successful... here's a start.
This question was sent to me this week and I thought it was worth sharing. My answer follows.
"What do young adults need to do differently from in previous generations to be successful? With the impacts of today's economic crisis, what do young adults need to do to prepare themselves for the "real world?"
Not only is the world different, but this generation, the millennials, are different from previous generations. I would contend that there are several things that young adults need to do to be successful both now and for their futures.
First, we all need to put away the idea that the "real world" is something other than what we are all living in regardless of age. This idea sets the stage for ignoring the possibilities and opportunities that exist for young adults while they are still young. Young adults are just that - young ADULTS. In generations past they would be full members of the tribe by this time. They need to, first and foremost, take themselves seriously as full adults and show up in the world as such. If they show up expecting to receive their due of respect they are 100 times more likely to receive it. Do not wait until you have aquired a high school diploma or a college degree or started your first job before feeling like the time has come and you are ready to make an impact. Do it now. You are ready today.
Second, figure out what you really want out of life. The sooner the better. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" might sound cliche but it is ultimately the most important question that a young person can wrestle with and its meaning must be more holistic than it sounds. The answer must include values about lifestyle, personal causes, talents, and career aspirations. Studies have shown time and time again that people who know what they want and have written it out as a plan will get it or at least get much closer to it than those who do not.
Third, begin a networking lifestyle now. Learn what that means. Network yourself into the classes you want, the college you want to attend, the job you wish to secure, and any other opportunities you are after.
Fourth, learn the concept of givers gain (some call it the golden rule) and not only will you find success but success will find you.
Fifth, cultivate your confidence. Self confidence stems from self discipline as well as a sense that all people put their pants on one leg at a time no matter if they are a shift worker or the CEO of a Fortune 500. Confident people attract opportunities and success to them.
Sixth, learn from the experiences of others. Don't insist upon making all of your own mistakes along the way. Learn from other's mistakes and trimphs.
Finally, be true to yourself. Determine your own values, interests, and goals or you will end up changing gears half way when it becomes clear that someone else's plan doesn't fit you.
Here's to the next generation!
